Data Protection

VMware Backup

You can back up VMware virtual machines on schedule or ad hoc, both locally over LAN and offsite over (a slow) WAN. You can save up to 1,000 recovery points per VM and, using the Grandfather-Father-Son (GFS) retention scheme, rotate them on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.

VMware Backup Copy

Backup Copy jobs provide a simple and powerful way to create and maintain copies of your backups. Backup copies can be stored onsite, offsite, or in Amazon Cloud. Backup Copy jobs have their own schedule and recovery point retention policy, so you can easily set up your jobs to fit your needs.

VMware Backup

What is VMware Backup ?

VMware VM backup is a point in time copy of an entire VMware VM that is stored in a special folder, called backup repository:

NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides the ability to create VM backups on demand, on schedule and store backups locally, offsite, as well as in private/public clouds.

What is VMware Replication ?

VMware replication creates and maintains an identical copy of a source VM on a target ESXi host. The copy of the source VM - called a VM replica - is a regular VM that is available in the VMware vSphere. VM replicas remain in the powered off state and do not consume any resources, yet you can simply power them on, in case of a disaster.

NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides the ability to add both individual VMs and all VMs within selected VMware containers (such as resource pools, folders, hosts, clusters, etc.) to a replication job. That is, all your new VMs that are created in or moved to a protected container are automatically added to your replication job. This way all your most critical VMs are always replicated.

With NAKIVO Backup and Replication, you can create up to 30 recovery points for a VM replica. Each recovery point is a regular VM snapshot, so if a source VM has been damaged, you can easily return the VM replica back to a previous good state even without NAKIVO Backup & Replication.

Flexible Recovery Point Retention Policy

With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can save up to 30 recovery points for a VM replica. Using Grandfather-Father-Son (GFS) rotation scheme, you can rotate recovery points on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.

Flash VM Boot (Instant VM Recovery)

With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, you can recover entire VMs from their backups within seconds. The Flash VM Boot feature (Instant VM Recovery) enables you to boot VMware VMs directly from compressed and deduplicated VM backups, without recovering the entire VMs first. This feature works right out of the box without any special setup: you just choose one or more VM backups, a recovery point, a host (or a resource pool, or a cluster) where to run the recovered VM(s), and push a button – the VM(s) are started in just a few seconds.

The backup from which the VM is started remains unchanged to preserve the integrity of the data. All changes are stored separately and are either discarded when you power off the VM.

Full VM Recovery from VM Backup

If a backed up VM is accidentally damaged or deleted, you can recover the full VM from the backup in just a few clicks. The entire VM will be recovered in exactly the same state as it was during the backup and will appear on the ESXi you selected for recovery - there’s no need to manually recreate the VM, install an OS, and then restore data.

Disaster Recovery with VM Replicas

Because VM replication creates an identical copy of source VMs, recovering from a disaster is as simple as powering on the replicated VMs. If a source VM has been damaged and then replicated, you can roll back the replica VM to a previous recovery point.

Storage Space Reduction

Global Data Deduplication

NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically deduplicates backed up data at the block level across entire backup repository, and saves only unique blocks of data. This dramatically reduces backup size.

Efficient Data Compression

After data deduplication, the product automatically compresses each block of data so it occupies even less storage space in a backup repository.

Performance

Network Acceleration

Data compression and traffic reduction techniques enable the product to reduce network traffic by 50% on average, thus decreasing the network load and speeding up backup and replication times by 2X.

Multi-Threading

NAKIVO Backup & Replication can run dozens of backup, replication, and recovery jobs simultaneously, which speeds up data processing and shortens the time windows allocated to data protection.

Direct SAN Support

The product supports fiber-channel and iSCSI SANs, enabling to offload production network and significantly increase the speed of backup and replication.

Forever-Incremental Jobs

After the initial backup and replication (which can also be done via a removable media), all jobs are forever-incremental and do not require running periodic full backup or replication. This reduces backup windows and network load. In addition, the product uses VMware’s Changed Block Tracking technology to quickly identify data blocks that have changed since the last job run.

Reliability

Built for Virtualization, Certified by VMware

Built for virtualization, NAKIVO Backup & Replication has been tested by VMware and has received the highest level of endorsement – the VMware Ready status.

Screenshot Verification

NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides an automated way to (near) instantly verify all VMware VM backups and sends screenshots of the restored VMs as a proof of recoverability.

Repository Self-Healing

The self-healing feature automatically runs periodic self-checks verifying repository integrity. If there are errors in the repository – such as missing or partially written metadata – the product automatically repairs them.

Full Synthetic Data Storage

NAKIVO Backup & Replication stores backup data in the full synthetic mode. This enables to recover VMs from any recovery point even if a previous increment is lost or damaged.

Automated Job Retries

Many factors – such as temporary network disruptions or high server load – can prevent jobs from completing successfully. NAKIVO Backup & Replication automatically retries failed actions multiple times and resumes jobs from the point of failure, to help prevent starting over from scratch.

Usability

Fast and Easy Deployment

NAKIVO Backup & Replication is purely agentless and can be fully installed and configured on a Windows or Linux OS in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee. Pre-configured VAs are also available for a streamlined deployment.

Intuitive Web UI

The product features a simple and intuitive Web user interface that enables to manage all aspects of data protection at any time and from anywhere, even from a tablet.

Job Grouping

With NAKIVO Backup & Replication you can arrange jobs in groups to represent applications, services, locations, or any logical structures. You can then run bulk actions on all jobs in a group with a single click.

Advanced Reporting

The product can keep you up to date on jobs status with email notifications and enables the generation of overview reports on schedule and send them over email as well. You can also easily generate a detailed PDF report for any job or group.

Cloud Support

Single-Click Integration with Amazon Cloud

NAKIVO Backup & Replication can be integrated with Amazon EC2 cloud in a single click, providing a simple, fast, and cost-effective solution for offsite backup.

vCloud Director Support

NAKIVO Backup & Replication can back up and replicate vCloud Director vApp VMs, perform granular recovery from vApp VM backups, as well as recover full VMs back into vApps.

Integration with Various Public and Private Clouds

NAKIVO Backup & Replication can be easily integrated with most public and private clouds and perform both protection of the cloud itself and also utilize the cloud as an offsite backup destination or disaster recovery site.

Cost Savings

Built-in Database, no Agents

The product comes with a built-in database and does not require to install, configure, or manage agents on protected VMs or ESX(i) hosts.

Low Resource Consumption

NAKIVO Backup & Replication requires just 2 CPUs and 4 GB of RAM for a single-site installation.

Linux Support

The product can be fully installed on a Linux OS which eliminates the need to purchase Windows licenses.

Lowest TCO, Fastest ROI

At NAKIVO, it is our goal to create the most intuitive, fast, and affordable VM data protection product. This is why the licensing and maintenance price of NAKIVO Backup & Replication is 2X to 4X lower than the competition.
